National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR) under the Ministry of Environment will hold the International Symposium on Biodiversity and Biological Resources on October 16 at the auditorium of NIBR, Incheon to mark its 10-year anniversary and unveil the vision for coming years.

At the event, NIBR will shed light on the achievements and meanings of securing Korea's biological sovereignty over the past decade, such as securing national biological resources, laying the foundation for bio-industry and building the national bio-resources information system.

In addition, NIBR will announce the future vision of "World-class Biodiversity Research Institute to Lead the Sustainable Future," which was invented upon consultation with industry-university-institute experts as well as civil society organization, as Korea's representative biodiversity and biological resources research institutes.

As a side event, the International Symposium under the theme of "Think of the Future with Biological Resources" will be held to mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of NIBR. Executive Secretary Cristiana Pasca Palmer of UNCBD and President Yoshihiro Hayashi of National Museum of Nature and Science and Japan will give special lectures during the symposium.

NIBR is Korea's first national biodiversity research institute, established in October 2007 with an aim to secure Korea's sovereign right over biological resources. For the past 10 years, the institute has set a list of 47,003 Korean species and collected 2.84 million specimens.

NIBR also boasts world-class exhibition and education programs on biodiversity, contributing to raising public awareness on the importance of conservation and use of bio-resources. Furthermore, it serves as a genetic resources information management center to respond to the Nagoya Protocol.

Baek Woonsuk, President of NIBR, said that "we will not sit on our laurels but continuously strive to promote R&D and take up challenges for the next decades to come." "Marking the 10th anniversary NIBR will take this year as a cornerstone to take a new leap forward for the sustainable development of biological resources," he added.
