The Ministry of Environment (ME) and the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI) will co-host the ceremony for "World Soil Day 2017" on December 5 at the JW Marriott Hotel, Seoul to raise public awareness on the importance of soil.

The United Nations (UN) designated December 5 as World Soil Day and the Korean government is holding the third celebration for World Soil Day since 2015.

ME set this year's slogan as "No Soil, No Planet" to embrace the meaning of UN official slogan for 2017 "Caring for the planet starts from the ground."

Soil is an essential, finite and irreplaceable resource in human livelihoods. The slogan for 2017 aims to raise awareness on the loss, devastation and inappropriate management of soil.

The celebration ceremony will draw about 400 participants from industry, academic and research circles as well as citizens. Environment Minister Citation and Minister Award will be given to five award winners and two students for their contribution made in the field of soil conservation.

On December 5-6, an International Symposium on Global Research Strategies for Soil Conservation will take place, which will be attended by soil experts from the European Commission Joint Research Centre (EC JRC) and East and Southeast Asia Federation of Soil Science Societies (ESAFS).

World-renowned soil experts including Dr. Panos Panagos of EC JRC and Prof. Zueng-Sang Chen of National Taiwan University will join the symposium to share thoughts on how to conserve soil.

Marking the World Soil Day 2017, ME will raise awareness on the importance of soil through various channels.

The ministry will play promotional video clip in elevators of apartment buildings and run a promotional advertising at buses in Seoul. In addition, it will post card-type news at the websites and SNS of relevant organizations to promote the event.

A documentary film on soil conservation, co-produced with EBS, will be aired on December 5 and 9. The film will deliver a message about why and how we should protect and live together with soil resources.
And, 30 photos that capture the beauty and significance of soil will be exhibited on December 5-6 at the celebration venue.

Director Kim Ji Yeon of Soil and Groundwater Policy Division said "I expect the World Soil Day 2017 to serve as a meaningful opportunity to encourage the public to join in soil conservation."
