▷ A global conference on heat adaptation measures will be held on April 26 in Busan as part of research activities by Pusan National University which was designated Climate Change Specialized Graduate School.

▷ Climate experts from Korea and Japan will share the trends of research and policies on heat waves and urban heat island, and find out solutions.

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Cho KyeungKyu) holds a global conference, titled "Heat Waves Adaptation Strategies for Addressing Climate Change," on April 26 at Nurimaru APEC House, Busan.

Organized by Pusan National University, which was designated as Climate Change Specialized Graduate School last December, the conference will draw about 100 participants from domestic and overseas research institutes, academia, civic groups and governments.

The conference is aimed at discussing latest trends in domestic and foreign policies on heat waves and urban heat island events that have been escalated due to climate change, and seeking solutions.
In Session 1, Chae Yeo Ra, head of Future Environmental Strategy Research Group of Korea Environment Institute (KEI), will diagnose key phenomenon regarding "Korea’s adaptation to heat waves." Senior Researcher Oh Dong Ha at Busan Development Institute will introduce the status of urban heat island effect and mitigation measures.

In Session 2, Yasunobu Ashie, researcher at Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, will introduce Japan's policies on urban heat wave regarding "Japan's adaptation to heat waves." Professor Takashi Asawa at Tokyo Institute of Technology will present the prediction on heat island based on case studies and the control simulation method. After thematic presentations, a panel discussion will be held.

Heat waves and urban heat islands effects have been on the rise in many countries including Korea due to climate change. For instance, the number of heat waves days nationwide in August 2016 was 16.7, which recorded a record high since 1973. And, the number of patients with heat related illness has doubled to 2,125 (17 deaths) from 2015.

Countries around the world have taken countermeasures to mitigate urban heat island effects including urban greening, securing urban stream and urban wind, expanding the share of renewable energy and building Cool Roof on top of buildings.

Shin Dong-in, Director of Environmental Cooperation Division, said "the conference will serve as a meaningful occasion to share experiences of Korea and Japan on heat waves and urban heat island, as well as to find ways to cope with climate change." "We will expand such conferences with other region including Europe and the United States to share climate change adaptation strategies and information," he added.
