Just weeks after issuing a plastics ban, the government of the Indian state of Maharashtra is believed to have decided to extend the deadline for disposal of banned items by two months for consumers and retailers.
The ban in India's second most populous state was only announced on 23 March. The deadline of 23 April has been changed to 23 June. The extension does not apply to manufacturers.
The Times of India – which noted that the banned items currently account for 80% of disposed plastic – reported the change on 5 April. An official notice is expected very soon.
Authorised personnel who find violations can impose fines, confiscate the banned items and register the offence.
