The French government and the national automobile industry have sealed a pact to boost the electric vehicles (EVs) market multiplying sales by five by 2022.
Launched yesterday in Paris, the “strategic contract” contains a number of mutual commitments articulated around three priorities. The first aims to reach a target of one million electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in circulation by 2022.
In 2017, 42,789 electrified vehicles (which includes conventional and ‘mild’ hybrids) were registered in the country, and by 30 April 2018 over 168,000 electric and plug-in hybrid cars were in circulation.
The government will maintain the EV bonus at least until that date, and will incentivise the installation of charging points, aiming to have one for every ten vehicles on the road, or 100,000 in total. The pact also intends to advance the batteries sector, where French manufacturers such as Renault and Peugeot are already leaders.
